Finger Lakes Hotel - Fun Things to Do

Travel to the Finger Lakes Region in Upstate New York and you’ll always have plenty of fun things to do. Stay at the Best Western Vineyard Inn and Suites and you’ll be within easy recreational reach of a multitude of major tourist attractions like Watkins Glen Raceway and the Corning Museum of Glass. Of course, that’s just the beginning of what our neighborhood has to offer. Here’s a list of our top ten favorite things to do:

Watkins Glen State Park. Watkins Glen State Park is the most famous of the Finger Lakes State Parks. Waterfalls, trails, picnic facilities, tent and trailer campsites along with excellent fishing await you at one of Reserve America’s Top Outdoor Locations for 2005. For more information, visit http://nysparks.state.ny.us/parks/info.asp?parkID=105

Bristol Mountain Ski Resort. Bristol Mountain has the highest vertical (1200 feet) of any ski resort between the Catskills and the Rockies. There are 32 slopes and trails for beginners, intermediate skiers and future Bode Millers. In addition, there is one 425-foot half pipe with 12-foot-high walls-extremely difficult, to say the least. The Glenn H. Curtiss Museum. On July 4, 1908, Glenn H. Curtiss flew his flying machine (“June Bug”) more than 5000 feet to win the Scientific American Trophy. This was the first pre-announced, public flight in America, which earned him pilot’s license # 1.

A full-sized reproduction of the “June Bug” is one of several historic aircraft on display at the Glenn H. Curtiss Museum. For more information, visit www.glennhcurtissmuseum.org

The Windmill Farm and Craft Market. Beginning with roughly 100 vendors, The Windmill serves as an outlet for local producers and craftsmen. Now in its 20th year, The Windmill now plays host to nearly 200 shops and craftsmen, boasting everything from farm fresh produce to an on-site Chiropractor, you're sure to find something for everyone.  Many folks start the day at The Windmill with a hardy breakfast, pick up some fresh produce then set out to explore the many shops. Later, enjoy a horse and buggy ride, take in a free show, finally have a relaxing lunch in a mini pine tree forest..  Sidewalks throughout the market makes for easy maneuverability of strollers and wheelchairs.   Flower gardens also add a touch of beauty. www.thewindmill.com  [Top]

Watkins Glen Raceway. The action will be fast and furious all season long. It begins June 2-4 with the Watkins Glen Indy Grand Prix. The Sahlen’s Six Hours of The Glen, featuring the Grand American Rolex Sports Car Series, is scheduled for June 3, while the Menards Infiniti Pro Series and the IndyCar Series take to the historic long-course on June 4. The move to June will give Watkins Glen fans the first opportunity to see the newly-crowned 2006 Indy 500 champion. For more information, visit www.theglen.com  [Top]

Keuka Lake State Park. Nestled in the heart of wine country, Keuka Lake State Park has a gentle charm offering views of vineyard-covered slopes, sparkling water and clear blue sky. Garrett Memorial Chapel. Paul and Evelyn Garrett’s son Charles passed away in 1929 at the age of 26 from tuberculosis. To honor his dying wish to “go home to Bluff Point,” the couple created Garrett Memorial Chapel two years later on Bluff Point overlooking Keuka Lake.

Both architecturally and spiritually moving, the chapel today is used for summer services and makes a gorgeous setting for weddings.

Keuka Maid Boat Cruise. A great way to enjoy the breathtaking vistas of rolling hills and vineyards surrounding Keuka Lake-the “gem of the Finger Lakes”-is to sign up for a Keuka Maid cruise. Daytime and evening cruises both feature great buffet meals. Nighttime is also the right time for mixing it up on the dance floor. There’s a separate sound system on every deck and dance floors on both the first and second decks. For more information, visit www.keukamaid.com  [Top]
